Anna Wedlock composed the stunning string arrangement for this song, which was written for Zuppa Theatre's City Ditties concert. The Bela String Quartet joined me at the Sonic Temple recording studio, along with dear friends Katy Hopkins of Analog Songs and Jason Michael MacIssac, on a November night that brought the first snow of the season - perfect for this love song to Halifax and someone special.
IN THE CITY
On a chilly November day in 2017, Katy Hopkins and Marc Montanchez of Analog Songs and Halifax artist and friend Stewart Legere joined me at the former Textile Mill in Windsor to document its sad beauty and a song inspired by it. From the outside, you notice how much of the mill is broken - punctured windows, crumbling bricks, roof shingles lifting and leaving. Inside, there is a feeling of accidental preservation; the air was an easy five degrees cooler, echoes come from sounds made long before your arrival, and unwitting sounveirs of the Mill's working days still lie in their proper places. Windsor townfolk on the street and online and in line at the grocery store tell me about their own connections to the place - nearly every local family had a member employed at the Mill at one point in its history. They tell me about the herd of workers moving en masse through Windsor's streets when the lunch bell rang. But no one has said what the future holds for the Mill, beyond being a place where memories and dreams weave and wait together.
